Tattooing, an ancient practice deeply rooted in diverse cultures worldwide for millennia, holds a rich history.
In the Philippines, tattooing has ancient origins, once so prevalent that upon the Spanish arrival, the Visayans were dubbed los pintados, meaning "the painted ones."
These tattooing traditions varied from elaborate ceremonial and ritualistic expressions to more personal and decorative forms. Often, tattoos symbolized personal accomplishments, a theme that endures in contemporary tattooing.
Having been born in the Philippines and spending my formative 12 years there, I am deeply honored to perpetuate these traditions. It feels like a meaningful way to preserve the practices of my ancestors.
Each morning, I engage in sacred daily rituals and habits, an integral part of my life. I aspire to integrate this reverence into my work, hoping it resonates with those who bear these meaningful markings
The term "tatu" denotes the act of creating skin patterns through pricking and colouring.

ABOUT ME

As far back as my memory stretches, I've always been drawn to art, thriving in anything creative during my school years. Born in the Philippines, my life took a turn when I arrived in Australia at the age of 12. The opportunity to immerse myself in both cultures fueled my curiosity about life and my purpose. A pivotal moment came when I got my first tattoo, a tribute to my auntie who cared for me. Her passing at my 16th year left me with heavy guilt, realizing too late that I never expressed my gratitude. The therapeutic and vital impact of that tattoo on my journey through growing pains became apparent only after its completion. It was then that I fell in love and dreamt of becoming a tattoo artist. Life, however, led me to work in a bank for a prolonged period to make ends meet. Yet, my passion for creative arts, whether expressed through drawing, dancing, or music, never waned. The turning point came when I was offered a tattoo apprenticeship at the age of 27, and from that moment, I never looked back. The art, the challenges, the connections – everything about being a tattoo artist resonates with the beauty I find in it. This journey unfolded into a profound healing experience, and now, with a heart full and ready, I am eager to give back. If you allow me, I'm prepared to embark on this transformative journey with you. Jess
